They Said Her Paintings Were ‘Too Weird’ — Now One Just Sold for $84,000

For most of her life, Lucy Brennan’s art was misunderstood.

In school, teachers marked her work as “off-topic.” Her abstract, emotional brushstrokes didn’t match the assigned still-life exercises. She was told to focus on realism. To color inside the lines. To make her work more “commercial.”

But Lucy wasn’t interested in painting fruit bowls.

By her late 20s, she was living in a one-bedroom apartment, selling custom portraits online and working night shifts at a grocery store. She still painted every day — large canvases that looked like swirls of emotion. Raw. Loud. Unfiltered.

When she showed them to galleries, the responses were brutal.

“Not marketable.”
“Too chaotic.”
“Nice technique, but no story.”

She stopped submitting her work. She started painting in secret.

Then, during the pandemic, everything changed. Like many people stuck at home, she joined TikTok. One day, on a whim, she recorded a video of herself painting one of her “weird” canvases from start to finish.

She posted it. Went to bed.

By morning, the video had 800,000 views.

People were obsessed.

They called her art “explosive.” “Unapologetic.” “Like looking at feelings.”

Comments poured in. She gained 200,000 followers in three weeks. Her website crashed under the weight of orders. She started selling out pieces before they were even dry.

Last month, one of her paintings — a 6-foot canvas called “It Didn’t Hurt Until Later” — sold for $84,000 at a private auction.

The gallery that once told her to “tone it down” sent her an email asking if she’d consider a solo show. She declined.

“I didn’t change my art. The world just finally caught up.”

Now 31, Lucy lives full-time as an artist. She teaches online workshops, donates pieces to mental health organizations, and still paints every day — in all the weird, wonderful ways she used to be ashamed of.

Her story has become a reminder to creatives everywhere:

You don’t have to be understood to be valuable. You just have to be honest.
